High Street Resurfacing

For three nights the High Street has been closed for resurfacing. On night 1 they dug up the old tarmac. On night 2 they laid most of the new tarmac.

On night 3 they tarmaced the the Bus Layby and other fiddly areas.

All looking very nice first thing this morning.

It is just a shame that the pavements will need to be pulled up and relaid. People have been told by County Councillors that some of the slabs were the wrong size and as a result it has gone awry.

A bit of The Mayor of Abingdon's Day

The Mayor, Patricia Hobby, was there this morning to cut the ribbon and toast Dream Doors, the new kitchen refurbishment business run by Mike & Elaine (centre). All the best to them.

The Mayor was also there with her team, most of Abingdon Town Council, to play Phab at carpet bowls and a quiz this evening.

Nigel Carter, him in the sky blue, runs the Phab club, who meet every Thursday at Christ Church Centre. Phab's aim is to create opportunities for children and adults of all abilities to enjoy life together. Nigel makes that 'mission statement' fun.

In terms of carpet bowls the create opportunities bit means that those who have not got as much muscular control as the rest of us can use a bit of guttering to aim the ball.

At the end of the evening the Mayor presented Nigel with the annual Abingdon Town Council v Phab Trophy.

First Daffodils in the Ock Mini Park

Daffodils are late appearing this year. These clusters are on the bank of the River Ock alongside the Ock Mini Park.

The Ock Mini Park is that recently cleared empty looking patch of ground near the Drayton Road double roundabout.

Planting has now begun, and there are ideas afoot to make this into the MG memorial park with a trail of stones bearing the names and possibly outlines of MG Models.

I'd also like to see a large immovable model of an MG car to complete the transition from Ock Mini Park to Ock MG Park.

Swapped Sides

A couple of years ago there was a flower seller and a snack bar on the precinct. Times got hard and both closed up their shutters for the final time.

A couple of months ago a snack bar opened up where the flower seller once was, and a few days ago a flower seller opened up where the snack bar once was - in the recently renamed Abbey Shopping Centre.

They have swapped sides.

Demolition work at Old Gaol begins

Work on the Old Gaol has begun. The swimming pool extension - the building behind the Turner Bros. Demolition LTD sign, will be demolished, and return the Old Gaol to it's pre 1970s shape.

The part of the Old Police Station surrounded with scaffolding will also be demolished to provide a new access.

New Trailer

The Abingdon Sea Cadets were on the Market Place to say thankyou for the support they have received over recent months from the people of Abingdon.
With a grant from the town and district councils, and donations from local people, they have been able to get a new boat trailer.
