Abingdon Town Boxing Club Darts

Abingdon Town Amateur Boxing Club had a fund raising event in town today. They are trying to raise the money for a boxing gym and community hall on Caldecott Rec. Today there was a darts marathon for 12 hours at the Stock Bar, and a raffle,

and Santa's Grotto.

Anyway many many hours later the darts came to an end...and a small trophy was presented to Rick, who had the highest score on the night. Many thanks to those who were so generous in their support. The town always shows great support and generosity to the boxing club but they still have quite a way to go.

Christmas Lights

The overhead lights along the High Street are new this year. The curtain of lights in the museum and the candles on the Market Place are there for the second year.

The Finishing Touch won the best window for the second year running.

All back to front in the window of Costa.

The Abbey Shopping Centre has these shooting stars which are not quite so new.

On Saturday Carbon Cutters will be holding a short candle-lit vigil in the Market Place in Abingdon (round the Christmas Tree) at 5.30pm to support the negotiators in Copenhagen.

Majestic View of The Community Hospital

Also fairly new is the Majestic Wine Warehouse just off the A34 and next to the Esso Garage. It is a warehouse and so you don't just pop in for 1 bottle. Although to cater for people like me - without a wine cellar - they now start with 6 bottles where it used to be 12.

Out of the other side there is a view of The Abingdon Community Hospital.

Select Convenience

I still hear people saying they are going to Londis even though the franchise has been changed to Select Convenience for a couple of months now. Select Convenience are part of the same group as Bargain Booze and Thoroughgoods.

Cemetery Changes 2009

As you may know there are two cemeteries, both near Spring Road. There is the old cemetery with the two chapels.

During 2009 it had the walls recapped and pointed as they were in need of some TLC.

And there is the new cemetery round which the gates and railings have had some TLC in 2009. The railings look quite sharp now with the gold tops.

Also new bins are being installed to allow separation of compostable from other waste.

And within the new cemetery a new garden of remembrance for cremations is in the process of being created. The old one is almost full.

The cemetery itself has - maybe - another 12-15 years, depending on various factors, before it starts getting full.

7. Mr Ely's Fountain

Number 7 on the Abingdon Heritage Advent Calendar is Mr Ely's Fountain.

It says "A brick fountain-head created by Mr Richard Ely and placed into a building in Ock Street in 1719 to help provide a better water supply. The building was in a bad state after WW II and the Friends of Abingdon arranged for the fountain to be moved to its present location in the wall of Tomkins Almshouse off Conduit Road."

Catchup on the Fair and Extravaganza

More pictures from the last two events which I did not have room for earlier...

A short circular Video of the Abingdon Concert Band on the Market Place yesterday morning during the local craft fair.

The Mayor, Councillor Patricia Hobby, drawing the raffle prizes. There were 12 prizes in all, each donated by one of the craft stalls, for the Mayors Charities. You will hear by telephone if you have won.

Extravagana Evening... The Natural Health Centre off St Edmunds Lane had put up their stall in front of Lansbrough Estates.

Another near neighbour of mine, just up West St Helen Street, are The Honey Pot...

My daughter, at Thorntons, got me one of those chocolate Advent Calendars and I am already up to day 17 after a binge lastnight, so Christmas will come early this year.
