Scouting on The Market Place

Abingdon and District Scouts were holding a promotional event on Abingdon Market Place.

There are plenty of youngsters who want to join, but there are often not enough adults to lead.

When it comes to some of the more exciting activities like fire making then the ratio of leaders to scouts is important.

So this event was not just to appeal to the youngsters but also to the adults. The need for adult helpers not only applies to scouts but to most youth groups.

Carmina Are Back

Carmina came to the Unicorn Theatre in Abingdon in 2008. They were back again last night. Another triumph for Pam who hosts. For more and better pictures of 2008, and soon of 2009, go to Music at the Unicorn Pictures.

The Tanneries - Phase 1

The new houses off the Drayt0n Road have been sold to S0HA (formerly the South Oxfordshire Housing Association.)

I checked the S0HA website, under shared ownership in Abingdon, to find...

The Tanneries, Drayton Road

5 three-bedroomed houses
13 four-bedroomed houses
14 two-bedroomed apartments

Available from July 2009...

That leaves about half to be available later in the year - still being worked on.

Good news for the Old Gaol development that Cranbourne Homes don't have a lot of unsold properties on their hands. The Old Gaol should be their next enterprise. But these are still difficult times.

Not Too Late for This One

Have you ever dreamed of kayaking, rowing or sailing on the River Thames in Abingdon. Now is your chance to try it for free between 10am and 3pm this Saturday at Wilsham Road Abingdon.

Commodore Tim from the Abingdon Sailing Club was there under the County Hall to encourage you to make your dream come true.

I see in the Abingdon Herald that vjp, drayton says about the Dalton Barracks event last weekend...

"Why do we always get to know about these events after they've been held? Where can we find information beforehand?"

For some there is the new Abingdon Diary , the Town Council Events Page and the Herald Events.

It is a two sided problem. There are people putting a lot of effort into staging events but then not able to publicise them quite so well, and people wanting things locally TO DO, and missing things like vjp.

So any ideas? Like anyone younger than me willing to do an Abingdon Face Book or Twitter or text subscribers 'What's Happening' a few days before about local happenings.

Shop To Let

This estate agent has been moth balled for a while, the Abingdon outlet sometimes showing properties but really operating from their Oxford office. The To Let sign looks as though Abingdon has lost an Estate Agent.

Army Fun Day at Dalt0n Barracks

These are the people watching at the first arena near where you walk in...

There was an assault course ending with a Land Rover pull

and trials bike riding with a leap over three lorries.

Deputy Mayor Duncan Brown was there in body armour.

In another area there was a Brass Band, and Fiji Island dancers,

and falconry.

There was a lot going on... a fun fair, many stalls, things to try like archery, paint balling, and army meals served from shining tureens at £3.50 a go.
