Local Roots at One

After an exciting first year, selling only products grown or made within a thirty mile radius, Local Roots are one year old today.

There was Bungee Jumping at the Boundary House

Between 12 and 2 pm today. Looks like fun, but I decided not to join the long queue waiting for a go.

Good Friday Rain

The Good Friday service on the Market Place - 'The Church in Abingdon Act of Faith' - was cancelled last night because of the expected rain. Water and electrical equipment do not mix too well.

For those who had not heard of the cancellation, there was an impromptu gathering in St Nic's - and the church was nearly full.

A bridge no more

Near St Helen's Mill, the scaffolding has been taken away and the bridge is no more.

Here is the little bridge in happier days, 51 years ago. Many Thanks to Colin for this one.

Couldn't get much better...

There was a 6:15 kick-off in this local derby game. I got there half way through the first half. Saxton Rovers were already 1-0 up.

This was Saxton's second goal.

3-0 at half-time. Just one booking for swearing at the ref...

Saxton Rover are celebrating their 50th season. The weekend before last they won the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup for the first time. Before this game they were top of the North Berks League - five points clear with four games in hand, and unbeaten. Couldn't get much better...

Butterfly Stands

All the bikes are to be found locked on one side of the fence, off Stratton Way, or against the upturned U stands nearby. The wheel gripper / butterfly stands are all unused the other side of the fence.

Donkey Service

A donkey came to help lead the Palm Sunday procession, starting at the Reynolds Way shops in South Abingdon.

Pollyanne, the resue donkey, is much sought after for church work. She has also taken part in carnivals, and appeared in Operas at Covent Garden.

She led the procession to the Preston Road Community Centre, and did not bray AT ALL during the fifteen minute service of hymns and prayers.

The retiring collection was for the Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary where she lives.
