There were a record 33 stalls at the Local Excellence Market organised by the Abingdon-on-Thames Chamber of Commerce, and all week there have been notices up to advertise the event.
The Mayor, Monica Lovatt, walked through to have a look around on the way to Abingdon School where today is prize giving.
The Veg Van was there. It will be stopping weekly at the Northcourt Centre on Friday, 8.15 – 9am, selling local produce. It will do other stops if there is sufficient demand for an area. More details at Cultivate Oxford
There were a mix of chamber members, and stalls from the Farmers Market such as the cheese man.
There were also craft stalls such as the The Pathway Workshop. This young lady was painting one of their signs before taking it home.
I spent a brilliant morning there and spent a lot of money! It was all so tempting. Abingdon Town Centre looked so lively, it was great to see. Well done to the organisers.
So nice to see Abingdon busy and bustling. Hoping it had a knock on effect for other shops.
It’s getting increasingly difficult to fault the efforts made by the Local Elected Councillors, The Mayor and the efforts made by the Abingdon-on-Thames Chamber of Commerce. I’m also encouraged that comments on this Blog have been positive regarding the Excellence market…
However during an ‘English Summer’, having building works going on in the main town shopping area has not helped… two hour free parking is good (thanks to the Vale and probably others), apart from the Market, I wonder how the local businesses have survived!… the area around Bury Street still looks ‘work in progress’!, I was there Friday, as a local person and.. it did not look good.
Its probably not the right forum, but can I ask… has anyone recently mentioned reinstating Free Wifi In Abingdon, Wantage got commended for there efforts.
Just to clarify that this market is organised by the Choose Abingdon Partnership, not the Chamber of Commerce.
It is sometimes difficult to work out which organisation is organising an event as many people in Abingdon belong to many different groups & organisations.
I don’t know the details but my understanding is that the wantage wifi is a pilot for all towns in the vale, so assuming successful we can expect here at some point (I’m not aware of timetable – don’t know if any of the vale councillors who post here happen to know any more detail?)
As Paul says, this is one of the Market Place events organised by the Choose Abingdon Partnership. As far as I can see the idea of having regular events which built up steadily under the Lib Dem administration is continuing under the Conservatives which is a jolly good thing.
Iain – what happened to the town centre wi-fi that was set up by the Town Council about three years ago? Did the Town Council decide to discontinue it at some point?
CHAPs and the Chamber complement each other and it should be no surprise that the Market Place events continue regardless of which party is in control.
We are all working together to support the town’s businesses and citizens so can we drop the partisanship and just move forward peacefully?
I was told that the free wifi was hosted in the museum, so went off when the museum closed for refurbishment. I have no idea how accurate this information is, nor why it cannot now be switched on again.
I often used the wifi in town.
