Looking down on the Old Gaol it appears that about half the flat roofs on the new build will have vegetation. The Old Gaol website says, in the sustainability section “Sustainability features include: Green roof technology on some buildings to reduce annual water run-off by at least 50% …”.
I am not against modern architcture, provided it is good to look at, but this reminds me of a couple of factory units.
Not quite in keeping with the Old Gaoll stonework but not many will have access to this high veiwpoint.
Perhaps it will become known as the Abingdon Acropolis -It might look better when it is finished ? (He said, optimistically)
Everyone can get a good high vantage from the museum roof which is open to the public. If you haven’t had a chance to go up I’d encourage people to do it as there is a great view of the town.
The design of the new blocks is ‘modern’, but from the drawings there is a good chance it will actually be a big improvement on the modern halls that had been added to the Old Gaol building for the sports hall and pool.
The Old Gaol itself should look a lot better as a result of this development.
Does anyone know when this is due for completion?
It’s like having a chalk cliff at the bottom of the garden. Visiting archaeological/architectural societies have been, lets say, underwhelmed by the unimaginative and inappropriate design.I hope it weathers quickly as I need sunglasses to look out of my bedroom window on a bright day.Either that or let’s hope the green roof grows quickly down the side and hides the whole thing.
Ste – as far as i remember the new-build apartments are due for completion late this year or next, with the Old Gaol conversion due to complete in 2014.
