On-Street Parking changes

Town Centre Parking
In Abingdon Town Centre some new bays have been painted for the residents parking scheme.

It currently costs residents £100 a year for a permit to park in the town centre spaces, but that will soon be going up to £120.

New play and display machines will be coming in March 2017 to replace the current ‘obsolete’ machines. The new machines will allow payment by telephone, credit cards, and coins, but won’t support the current card based system whereby residents can get a day’s parking for visitors for 40p. New scratchcards will be used instead, allowing 25 days visitor parking, and an additional 25 days at a cost of £20.

Other people using the on street parking will be charged 50p for an hour, up from 40p, and 80p for 2 hours, up from 60p.

Sounds like residents are being punished for their town centre location, rather glad I don’t have to park in Abingdon. Just out of curiosity is there anyone to enforce parking (residents or public) in Abingdon nowadays?

It’s about time they replaced the machines. They don’t take new 5p’s or 10p’s. Trying to find old ones to pay with now is impossible. This means you can only pay with 20p’s. Many times I’ve had to put a £1 in as I don’t have enough 20p’s. As the machines don’t give change it is daylight robbery from the Town Council.

Badger – yes traffic wardens do patrol the Town Council bays. They are a total nightmare and have not made many friends for the businesses in West Saint Helen Street!

Commuters are now parking on single yellows on a daily basis on road leading to Cygnet Court off Caldecott Rd without any penalties being issued. Really needs addressing.

Payment by phone is all very well but regularly travelling around the country I now need apps. for about half a dozen different companies that operate these for the local authorities.

I have suggested this before. West St Helens Car park is always full for normal shoppers. It is time to build a second floor above the existing car park. Also the direction arrows need to be painting, one day someone is going to get knocked over by cars driving at speed in the wrong direction to get to a space to park in.

There was a traffic warden knocking on doors on Spring Road this morning to get their cars moved. (It’s no parking after 8am until later). The parked cars hold everything up hugely in the morning school run.

The traffic wardens do patrol the streets. They are helpful and do their job well. It is wrong for people to criticise such public servants for doing their jobs.
