Every Day To Be Happy and Inspired Learning Together

Passing Larkmead School at the weekend I was impressed by their logo and motto.

The schools in Abingdon have the following mottos (taken from their web sites):

Caldecott Primary School – Happy Learners, Aiming High.
Carswell Community Primary School – Happy Together, learning for Life.
Dunmore Primary School – Great to be Inspired, Inspired to be Great.
Fitzharrys School – Together Everyone Achieves.
John Mason School – Excellence Through Creativity.
Larkmead School – One Community, Individual Minds, Creating Futures.
Our Lady’s Abingdon – Altogether a better education.
St Edmund’s Catholic Pimary School – In our school every day we learn, love and pray.
St Nicholas CofE Primary School – Learning Excellence.
Thameside Primary School – Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day.

Taking the frequently used words, and putting them together, I get the motto “Every Day To Be Happy and Inspired Learning Together.”

As a partner of a Headteacher I’ve come across a lot of school strap lines, ranging from the insincere and clumsy through to the occaisionally inspired – with some hilarious ones inbetween. Schools are under a lot of pressure to be branded and marketed (anything other than concentrate on educating young people), altho’ Kenny’s Hat can rest assured that generally only (volunteer and unpaid) time is spent on such things. Looks like Abingdon has a good crop, some very sweet primary school ones. As Backstreeter has inadvertently pointed out, sometimes an algorythm might produce just as good a result!

I believe Our Lady’s school motto is actually “Age quod agis” – or “whatever you do, do it well”
I think “Altogether a better education” was only coined when the Senior and Junior school were combined and they made the decision to go completely co-ed.
Another saying sometimes used comes from the school’s founder, Catherine McAuley who said “To each according to their needs”

Pat – just to confirm the logo was indeed designed by the students. They also did worked with a designer to develop the school uniform

Re post 11, interesting to hear that the founder of Our Lady’s used to quote a tenet most commonly associated with Karl Marx!

Hester – I hadn’t thought of that. However – Catherine McAuley (1778-1841) got there first! Sorry though – I got it slightly wrong – she founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831, and they founded the school in 1860.

Thanks Millihelen – it conjures up all sorts of interesting thoughts about the ethos behind the school at the time – assuming it was where it is now it was right opposite the workhouse. Wish I’d got time to research it a bit more – maybe one day.
