Splash of Pink

Last night in preparation for the Splash of Pink event on the Market Place, the County Hall was given a splash of pink.

Today there were a lot of pink stalls on the Market Place. Staff from the the Crown and Thistle (re-opening day soon) were there helping raise funds for Against Breast Cancer, the Abingdon based charity.

Buying and selling pink cakes was very popular.

Throughout the day a number of groups performed. Abingdon Music Centre Community Choir were out in force with Helen Eccleston playing keyboard and conducting.

Mr Hemmings Traditional Abingdon Morris Dancers danced with a pink ribbon round their hats, and in one particular dance were joined by a penguin.

Ashnah did some belly dancing.

In the gazebo nearest Costa an attempt was made on the world record of putting on and taking off a bra over a T shirt. I was too shy to take any pictures of, or take part in, that particular event but believe a new world record was set – ten bras in a minute. The video evidence will be sent for verification before the record is officially recognised.

I was away on Saturday so missed it all, but reading this report and the one on the Eco Fair really brings home how much our community groups are doing in Abingdon. Looking back to earlier this year we have had the Passion Play, Cycling Festival, Air Show, Bank Holiday Walks, Yeah Baby, Dragon Boat Day, Heritage Weekend – and still to come the Extravaganza (I have probably missed some – but you get the point).

Although most of the legwork for these is done by volunteers, the Town Council and Choose Abingdon provide the essential infrastructure – permissions to use facilities, advice/guidance, gazebos, help with advertising events and in some cases grants and/or manpower.

    So, 2013 has been a busy year – let’s make 2014 even better….

    Hello Alastair,
May I on behalf of Ashnah Dance thank you for inviting us to take part in this fundraiser to this worthy cause which unfortunately touches so many people! we all had a nice afternoon and we also all like the group picture. If I do have a comment, it’s related to the labelling of ‘bellydance’ which you attributed to our dance style. What we do is quite different in that it’s folkloric group dancing called ATS which stands for American Tribal Style dance – the misunderstanding and misrepresentation arises quite often so I thought I’d clarify it for your information. Thank you and warmest regards.
