14th April – Three or more reasons to be in Abingdon

I am hoping the weather on Sunday 14th April will be good. It will be a big day in Abingdon, and so a good day to visit the town for anybody needing an excuse.

360 boats from across the UK will race  against the clock  on the River Thames in the annual Head of the River event organised by Abingdon Rowing Club. The majority of club members and many of their family members volunteer a huge amount of time before, during and after the event to plan, set up, supervise and clear up.

The Upper Thames Patrol (the water-borne Home Guard in WW2) will be at Abingdon Lock for The Thames at War re-enactment event. There was a display at the Community Free Space last weekend.

The Abingdon Cycle Festival is also on that day.

It will also be Palm Sunday.

For those interested in all things River a meeting has been called by Layla Moran MP to ask the Environment Agency, Oxfordshire County Council and the Vale of White Horse District Council to explain why they have dropped the long promised Abingdon Flood Alleviation Scheme.

As someone who was badly affected by the flooding in 2007 I am ceratinly keen to hear their explanation, and to find out what they intend to do instead.

The meeting is 7.30pm on Thursday 7th March, and will be held in the Roysse Room in the Abingdon Guildhall.

360 boats is a really huge field – well done to all at ARC, sounds like it will be a really successful event

Good meeting on flood alleviation with plenty of information. Despite being told that there was no silver bullet, some questioners seemed to assume that there was and they had the secret.

Thanks to Layla Moran for organising it and to Horsesmouth for encouraging us to go.
