Two new bars

Two new bars
Two new bars are coming to the High Street, Abingdon, and both now have coloured vinyl displays on the windows. The Old Chemist’s green vinyl advertises books, cocktails, and gin, and food. It was Smiths the Chemist, and contains the old Abingdon library reading room.
Two new bars
Then directly over the road, where Stan James the bookmakers was, the blue vinyl says Mercer Bar is coming soon. The building is already looking much smarter without the big pigeon nets covering the top floor.

The two new bars join The Narrows, and The Grapes on the High Street.

Following on from Janet’s previous comments re purse thefts, yesterday a woman had her purse stolen in a distraction theft while shopping in New Look, the culprits then took the purse of another woman who was waiting outside the shop!
On Wednesday a 12 year old who was walking along east St. Helens st was approached by a man in a white Mercedes (with a part registration of N 11???) who encouraged her to get in his car!
    Anyone seen the police ?

Yes I agree with Horsesmouth. The police seem nowhere to be seen? They should be in the Precinct with information and warning people to be vigilant.

I saw two Community Police Officers in Waitrose yesterday afternoon. They were having a prolonged and clearly social chat with one of the shelf stackers. Perhaps they feel that their mere visible presence is enough?

Thank you Janet and Horsesmouth for your warnings.

the white car incident was on Tuesday afternoon around 3.30pm, the girl (my daughter) was obviously shaken but had the sense to refuse a lift ‘to her house’ she was then approached again and told to get in as she looked cold, i am glad she has been taught the ‘stranger danger’ this was reported to the police immediately – coming today to de-brief 25.01

The schools (Larkmead at least) have been pretty swift in issuing a notification and letter about this to reiterate the stranger danger and suspicious activity… Which is a good thing.

Out of character I know; but back to the topic…I am really looking forward to these two most interesting of establishments opening. Despite BREXIT. I guess we’ll just have to ‘gin and bear it’!

I really don’t get why people are surprised at the lack of police. The police have been warning about this for years. The then Home Secretary dismisses this as does the prime minister (same person). She doesn’t feel it as she looks outside her houses and sees armed police. Stop pretending this isn’t Tory’s at there best people

When someone else, or some other party is ‘at their best’, remind me… everything’s ok, yeah?

I remember people still unhappy when the red team was in. And then there was, like, a bluey yellow team…and people weren’t happy. Now there’s a blue team…and people continue to be unhappy.

I thought it was BREXIT that was the downfall of civilisation…?

It’s tough, down here in the more, trying to keep with the intelligencia…

Stop ignoring the facts Daniel. May basically told the police to shut up because she knew best. She also thinks she knows best over Brexit which is why we are in the shambles we are in. Horrible person and worse PM (other than Cameron the runner) in history

I don’t disagree, I’m just saying I don’t remember people not complaining previously, that’s all.

It’s always been bad, just in different ways. (Or it’s always been good; depending upon your pov).

Chris John, if only it was as simple as you say? And everything wrong with everything was down to a political party in as much as yes they’re all guilty of cost cutting in order to balance the books, but be honest that’s not the real problem with our police force. Bit like recycling really every county has their own remit, TVP have their own fire arms dept, their own HQ, their own workshops, admin staff, even their own crest ( and that’s not to mention a police commissioner and his deputy taking £200k out of the police pot) but try as they may to streamline and cut costs it’s the chiefs who stay in place and enjoy the ride retireing at 55 on a pension that for most of us is likened to winning the lottery, while Indians try to fight the good fight, but get totally demoralised – hence the PCSO’s spending so much time in Waitrose instead of on the beat ( as said in an earlier thread) Every bit of public employment has, in the public eye, been ruined by self greed, personal egos and nepotism!

Worse than Spencer Perceval? If the short list of two “worst prime ministers” is simply the last two, we have truly succumbed to the game-show model of political assessment.

When Tony Blair went, he was “the worst ever”; ditto, Gordon Brown. This is hardly a sensible way of considering any political leader.

Enoch Powell (not a pin-up of mine) had it closer to the truth:

“All political lives, unless they are cut off in midstream at a happy juncture, end in failure, because that is the nature of politics and of human affairs.”

Ha PPJS a brilliant quote and one I used on here a couple of years ago only to be lambasted by one of our “more educated” councillors who said it was first said by Eddy Izzard ! Little wonder we’re being led by bods if ignorance!

How did you manage to get one of those old mobile phones in your suit pocket? They were nearly the size of bricks!

A friend of mine had one; it was only mobile in the sense that you could carry it from room to room 😉
