WW1 War Memorial Tour

War Memorial Tour
On Saturday, 3rd November 2018 between 10:00 – 15:00 Mr Hemmings Traditional Abingdon  Morris Dancers will be visiting the war memorials of local villages remembering the end of WW1 in which many local Morris men made the ultimate sacrifice.
War Memorial Tour
Morris Dancing had a revival in the years before WWI but then according to Mr Hemmings web site there is no record of dancing during the war, and it was another twenty years until dancing in public became a regular event.  Joe Hemmings from 123 Ock Street, of the  Ock Street Morris Men,  was killed in action  at Contalmaison, France in February 1916.

Slightly off topic I’m pleased I’m not the only person in town to strongly object to the G4S security van man who parks actually on the war memorial every day while he walks off doing his deliveries because today he got more than he bargained for!
When I arrived at 20.30 he was already being taken to task by quite a few objectors – ironically though while this confrontation was going on an angry German gentleman ( well known in the towns coffee shops) came over and shouted he can park there, your soldiers shot my mother in ww2! Needless to say he got little sympathy – eventually I rang G4S Head office to complain but their response was he’s been given permission to park there by the police and town council! What nonsense . Be interesting to see if he’s there tomorrow?

It would be interesting to know whether any such permission has actually been given. The police don’t seem to deal with parking issues these days, and I am sure that the TC would not be keen to give individual permissions on a regular basis.

However, 20.30 is an odd hour to deliverymen to be parking up. Even the slowest courier has probably finished long before half past eight in the evening…

If G4S don’t have the exemption they are claiming, I suggest that the Town Clerk pays them a visit.
