Sophos and River Litter Picks

Sophos and River Litter Picks
Thankyou to Gareth for this picture of The Sophos IT team who went litter picking last Thursday (11 Oct) around the science park and streets of Abingdon and collected 48 kilos of rubbish. The equipment was kindly provided by the council.

There will also be a litter pick starting at Abingdon Lock this Saturday morning. The Kingfisher Canoe Club will be clearing the river and others will clearing the banks.

There should be more involvement by schools. Respect for the environment starts early. We often see school children throwing wrappers, tins and bottles down anywhere. I do not hear of any schools in this area participating in keeping Britain tidy schemes. Also the fast food outlets in the area should do more. Just recently I drove past a McDonalds bag thrown on the verge not far from McDonalds. Have not seen any involvement from them in preventing their litter from being dumped around town.

We know it’s term time because of the amount of litter on the paths alongside our local school.
When I was at school we did a litter pick every term around the school, that cured me of dropping any.
Though I did get into trouble a couple of times with mum when I forgot to empty my pockets.!

It’s not McDonald’s fault that some of their customers throw their litter away in an inconsiderate manner.

It’s the fault entirely of the people so doing.

Constantly blaming businesses for the failings of their customers isn’t going to solve anything. McDonalds could put bins every 10 feet throughout Abingdon, and some ignorant pig will still throw their rubbish on the ground.

Let’s put blame where it lies – with the individuals.

Janet – Larkmead has a community service scheme in the school where all students for specific year groups spend a day or two a year conducting a number of activities wfor the benefit if the school community, including litter picking.

I would be very surprised if the other schools dont also operate similar schemes.

Just because you dont know about it doesnt mean it isn’t happening

I agree with Janet on this one. I live very close to McDonalds and the litter is the bane of mine and neighbours lives. The pavements of our cul-de-sac are used as a secondary parking/dining room for the take-away customers, who do not take away their rubbish or left-over food. The bins on-site at McD are constantly full, so those who park near them just fling their rubbish nearby. I did go over to see the Manager at one point but he was not interested (this is some time ago so he may well have moved on).
I think what irritates me more is that some time ago this company received a prominent spread in a national newspaper in which they were held up, (no doubt from their supplied publicity), as good examples because they had a policy of sending staff out to clear their rubbish.
