A green bus shelter

Abingdon High Street
When most of the bus shelters in Abingdon got painted black, about six years ago, one bus shelter escaped. It can be found where Landseer Walk comes out on Preston Road. The shelter has not seen a lick of paint in decades, but is not completely forgotten. The 41 – South Abingdon Town Service – stops there.

This does not surprize me as South Abingdon seems to be neglected in any renovation project. I contacted Oxfordshire County Council about the growth of vegetation along the pavement at Ruskin Avenue. The growth of vegetation is not so bad but it traps rubbish. OCC said that because of cuts they do not deal with vegetation now only if it is a hazard. When I first moved to the area they kept it cut. Incidentally Nicola Blackwood voted to set the main central government grant to local government for 2015-16 at a level 25% lower than it was set for 2014-15. This explains why she is not campaigning for cuts to local services she agreed to them. I expect she accepted her pay rise with all the others and tax cuts for the rich. It is a disgrace.

I agree, Janet; OCC’s budget may be stretched, but once an area is put on the back burner its residents get the message – and it’s not a positive one.

I have long felt that the failure to maintain verges and headrows has further road-safety implications. Many road signs (which are put in place to warn of hazards ahead) are obscured; since they are the responsibility of the County Council, they hold a partial culpability when road-users make errors of judgement which the signs are designed to prevent…

…like all of it ppjs, if it doesn’t “make a profit”, it’s s cost….and all costs must be reduced. And to think… You and I paid for the accountants and con-sultants who came up with such policy.

I have asked the exact same request near me… For trees to be trimmed, and got the same answer as you. The ironic thing is…. is, in these dire times (remember, because of Brexit the world will end shortly), I wouldn’t feel quite so disgruntled if the things that OCC did do, they did well. But the things they do concentrate on…. And I’m referring to roads here, but fill in your own little piece of disappointment, they are disappointingly poor at. If they can’t do everything…at least do one thing well!

But whoever is responsible for the flowers is doing a sterling job. Well done!

Is this a surprise? at the last general election people voted in a government who pledged to make billions and billions in cuts, but who refused to specify where those cuts would fall.

Everyone assumed that the cuts would fall on the “undeserving” and “feckless”, and automatically ruled themselves out of that number, so thought they would not be affected.

You cannot make cuts on the scale the government is making without ALL the little people being affected. And that includes you and me.

I quite like that bus shelter, with its 70s retro style. All it needs to catch the era completely is one or two white dog turds around its edges.

I particularly like the bus shelters on Dunmore Road that have no buses (since the circular ones don’t go that way round so the ones on the side without houses are never used).
My dim recollection is that there were more buses along Dunmore Road when we moved here (1994ish) – what happened to them?
