Traditional Barbers are Booming

Traditional Barbers Booming
Re-style a new Traditional Turkish Barber has opened in Abingdon.

The first Turkish barber has been doing well and there is room for more. This is not so much competition, more of an overflow.

There are lots of men out there who want to look smart. And so traditional barbers shops are doing well in 2015. Three new barbers have opened in Abingdon in the last year and a bit.

I don’t think I ever saw a single customer in the shop that was there before so it seems likely that this will do more to improve the vibrancy of this bit of town – quite an interesting selection of businesses along there now ….

Interesting that we now have 3 Turkish barbers – here, High St and Bridge St. I also understand that this one is owned by the same people that own the High St shop. Are they cornering the market in Turkish barbers?

Here’s a thing, when who ever it was decided to remove the Porto loo contraption from the back of the old coop in queen street they also changed the towns only designated motorcycle parking bay onto another taxi rank, why ?

A little off topic but on my circular walk today I noticed 3 guys looking around the Upper Reaches site and car park… planning application in the pipeline? I hope not, I’d prefer it to be a hotel and restaurant again and not part of Cranborne-on-Thames.

Captain, you are entirely right. I too thought it odd a few years ago when it happened. As a motorcyclist, it was very easy to pull up and pop in to town to do some shopping and put some much needed poundage in our beleaguered shops on my way home. Convenient parking, exactly where I wanted.

Of course now…I just go to tesco.

Hopefully though….those taxis are reaping the rewards of a rank out the way and round the corner. No doubt a decision bought about by a consultant….

…better to have spaces for the taxis than a few short term parking spaces to facilitate “pop-in-ability” and help get some pounds from peoples pockets into shop tills.

Hester ….. me!! I was the single customer in the previous shop haha! I used to love Mary Kay and often popped in there. Had some unique outfits. Sad to see them go. Hope the new barbers does well.

Hey Blanky, my wife used that dress shop too. apparently they had been trying to off load their less there for sometime now and they also gave two other shops, one in Marlow and one in Witney, both thriving !

I for one am not impressed by the amount of Turkish Barbers turning up in Abingdon. And look at the latest ones frontage.

Abingdon should be a nice out of town tourist spot. We are turning into Chav Central.

An they do not provide you with a traditional haircut. They are young guys giving everyone the same zero grade back and sides left long on top. That’s the latest haircut and that is all they can do.

And, who gives them permission to hang towels outside on the pavement. The powers that be are letting Abingdon become a complete eye-sore. Disgraceful!

I once indulged myself there with the most beautiful mottled pink dress with Bath bun sugar sewn all over it. “Oh look”, cried my elder child, “it looks like veins”. Alas, it’s been known as my veins dress ever since, and I have felt vaguely less glamorous when wearing it …

I used to shop in Mary Brooks too!! Had some really lovely things from there. I have to say the High Street is not very inspiring now. Recently, some of the shop windows have become really garish. Not exactly in keeping with the traditional buildings.
At one time I lived in a town with a very old High Street ( it was rather like Abingdon in character). However, there were many restrictions in terms of what could be done to the shop fronts. It is still lovely, attracts lots of tourists, has thriving local independant shops and is much visited for evening dining etc. Ah well…..

Oh yes I forgot there’s a shop in Witney, thanks Captainkaos2. And of course I meant Mary Brooks not Mary Kay (that’s a makeup brand) …… Wonder why their other 2 shops are thriving compared to the one here that closed – town planning? Such a shame.

Going bald could have its advantages like being at least £120 pa better off plus 12 hours more spare time every year also.
