The Abingdon Spring Cycle Festival, run by Freewheeling, was a huge success with a large number of rides for people with varying ability and experience. There was also some track racing in the Abbey Grounds this afternoon for younger riders.
The Mayor, Councillor Monica Lovatt, came along to wish everybody well. This morning she was also on BBC Radio Oxford talking about Abingdon-on-Thames to presenter Bill Heine, along with Andrew Wright who runs the new We Love Abingdon website. Radio Oxford have been featuring Abingdon all week and were at the Farmers Market on Friday (with DJ Malcolm Boyden).
Riders came from as far away as Rome and as near as Abingdon Police Station. These two young policemen were taking part in one of the longer road rides.
All three Abingdon Bike shops took part: Outdoor Traders Cycle Club led a ride to see the White Horse in Uffington.
Pedal Power were there. And Behind Bars had a large stall for helping you look after your bike.
After the riding was over there were bands playing, refreshments, and treatment for aching muscles.
The event looked bigger than ever this year. One of the organisers told me that Abingdon was an amazing place, just in the way so many organisations and people come along to help.
Wow, this really is a great event for people who like me, are a bit mad about cycling.
How nice, there is also massages…!
There was a great buzz!
Weather was lovely for it, i visited the town lunch time, and had a walk round. The live band playing were brilliant!!!!.
Also noticed at Lodge Hill garage, a Classic and American car Rally . I couldn’t stop at the time. (Not very much parking, many people parked on the verges or on the opposite side of the road-bus stop). A group of Harley Davidsons riding through the town centre. Sat in ‘Cumbs having a spot of lunch.
Great day out on two wheels, can’t wait for the next one.
Thanks to everyone who came and joined us yesterday for the most successful festival ever. We have not counted the exact numbers yet, but we did have over 300 people take part (not including the volunteer leaders and sweepers).
I would not have space to thank everyone individually here, but the support from local business and the councils, not to mention the cyclists has been overwhelming.
The bands that took part were, The Jeff Young Trio (with Freewheeling cyclist Tony Lewis on drums), Target! and Funky Soul Trap
