Recently a Tesco Express opened in what was the Fitzharris Arms – very close to an existing convenience store called The One Stop.

The Ox pub is going the same way – taking on the Tesco colours – and right next door to another convenience store called Best One.

Local Excellence Market

Lots of people were out in town enjoying the occasional sunshine and the local excellence market.

The carrots and other produce on this stall were picked yesterday.

Duncan Brown, ex Mayor, bought some beetroot.

There were samples of very tasty Double Gloucester, and Blue Veined Cheddar, from Glastonbury.

Jill Carver, from Added Ingredients, had some very fine Olive Oil for people to try.

The carbon cutters had a bike that drove a food mixer making strawberry smoothies – just visible behind the Town Crier on the bike.
The local excellence market was on from 9:00 – 14:00 today.
Fair Trade Group
After all the Fair Trade Comments on the post about the Abbey Fish Ponds here is a post about Fair Trade …

The Chamber of Commerce’s Fair Trade group met at lunchtime to discuss re-establishing Abingdon as a Fair Trade town. There were representatives from shops, including Waitrose and The Co-op, the town council, churches, schools and general consumers.

As well as planning a Fair Trade day on the Market Place on 20th August – where there are still pitches available for businesses who would like to take part (contact the Chamber), the group set up a steering committee.
On 20th August, I will be going bananas for FairTrade again. But this time I hope to be part of a bunch. Banana costumes cost from £8 and upwards on the internet.

Nuffield Press are now located in Abingdon down the bottom of what is Nuffield Way, and part of the Nuffield Centrum, and adjacent to what was once the MG Works.
Since the 80’s Nuffield Press has diversified away from the Motor Industry into magazines, catalogues, brochures and college prospectuses. They are a good company with a solid reputation and plenty of history – according to comments in the trade journal Print Week , but times are tough for printers
