The sun has been out for a couple of days and people have been out in summer clothes.
For the first time today people could walk through the undercroft of the County Hall.
I have never seen it looking so light and bright.
There are now uplights in the pavements round the building, some of them in the new pavement at the front. I look forward to seeing it at night with the lights on.
It looks beautiful. I looked at it yesterday and thought what “a jewel in the crown” is Abingdon’s County Hall, and a new pavement in front of it now…lovely!!!
Not yet seen it in person, but does look really good.
Hope they have been treated to slow down the erosion and staining. Some of the buildings in Oxford look very sad compared with others which have been cleaned and refurbished . (Museums and Martyrs Monument).
The building does now look fantastic, and it’s nice to see the space in front of Throwing Buns being put to good use too and better pavements for pedestrians.
As with the refurbishment of the Market Place I suspect this is going to be one of those projects that many people grumbled about while it was being done but most people will see the benefit once it is finished.
I agree with the comments, but am sad/perplexed there’s no proper lift; older folk and others just can’t climb those stairs.
but has it been fenced off for so long that local teenagers will have forgotten the long held tradition of them drinking there all year round?
Thank you for your comments Isabel.
The stonework should last for another 100 years before needing repair again Colin.
Thank you Kat P.
John E There is no proper lift because English Heritage won’t allow it. PLEASE NOTE, this is something the council did want but we weren’t allowed. Hopefully we can look into it again at a future date.
Rudi, we wanted to glass off the bottom to increase exhibition space, it’s something that may have to be revisited in the future.
Many thanks, I hope you do look into the other issues with English Heritage.
In the meantime there were plans for an IT Based solution of a Virtual / Interactive Tour of the Museum from the Basement {MouseHole?!}. any further forward with that.
I ask as Club Secretary of Abingdon Phab, we all followed
the plans for a lift to all levels.with interest.
We have the ability in the town to produce a really good 3D virtual tour… I wonder if anything has been commissioned also.
Colin and Mark, you shall see when we reopen
Glassing off the the undercroft would be an act of vandalism. It was built to be an open space not a ruddy conservatory !
At the museum we would love to hear from those who remember the Mousehole Club in the museum basement. IF you have photos or comments, please send them to this email address or to the museum Ab 523703
Thanks !
