I was stuck by the contrast of the message of the Mayor’s carol service in giving charity to the poor and needy and the reality of the sweeping cuts to services for the homeless and vulnerable planned for 2017. Simon House Hostel for the homeless is to close as part of council cuts. No room at this inn. Not a happy new year for many vulnerable people.
Am I the only dismayed by the majority of Abingdon pubs charging a minimum of £10 for entry last night? We had a fabulous evening of free entertainment at the Broad Face where the owners took the very laudable view that no entry charge would be demanded, they would lay on an excellent band and thus ensure the pub was packed with very happy revellers! Learn a valuable lesson the rest of you cynica publ landlords and managers!

I think you’re simplyfing the event somewhat Andy, Most landlords make n y e ticket only so they can control who comes into their pub, I remember well the times before ticket only entrance and the pubs became a free for all with groups going from pub to pub causing trouble, yes some landlords are capatalising on the night, but I would rather pay a few quid for a known, planed event, let’s not forget also the brewery tap and the nags head have free music nights several times a week, all year, not just n y e, and no doubt all the revellers in the broad face enjoyed the next door fabulous fireworks the nags head put on,
