Four cygnets, in their grey and white feathering, are still with mum and dad on the River Thames in Abingdon. They will probably stay together until mum and dad start thinking about next year’s brood.
On Nags Head Island the hire boats of the Abingdon Boat Centre – normally to be found stood up on oil drums during the off season – are nowhere to be seen.
The Abingdon Boat Centre say on their web site “Please note that our boat hire season has ended earlier than normal this year as we are planning to renew our efforts to have the site redeveloped.
Our vision for the site based on our own original scheme for redevelopment includes a new chandlery, workshop, improved boating facilities and a restaurant at first floor level.”
Just across the river, work on the last phase of the Old Gaol is well underway, and the new structure for one of the new ground floor restaurants is outlined by steel girders.
Does anybody actually know what restaurants are going in? I heard a rumour of browns… But anyone know?
If customers can park in the grounds they could be on to a winner – as long as it’s not a hamburger joint or a take-away!!

I thought the outside looked very stark. I hope they soften the grounds with some trees and shrubs.
Re: needing trees. Isn’t this the part of the riverbank where they uprooted the lovely Willow Tree?!!
Perhaps the trees that this developer pulled up (contrary to Vale planning consents) at 65 Oxford Rd, could replant them here!?

I notice that on the ‘Old Goal’ website it mentions 2/3 restaurants planned for the building which occupies 1/2 Bridge St.
The actual prison building will comprise 10 apartments, a manager’s office, residents gym, and one restaurant. I wonder if non residents will have access?
What happened to the ‘Riverside Leisure Quarter’? Or did I interpret the original information wrongly?
