{"id":6021,"date":"2012-03-13T23:36:26","date_gmt":"2012-03-13T23:36:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/?p=6021"},"modified":"2012-03-13T23:36:26","modified_gmt":"2012-03-13T23:36:26","slug":"officially-for-the-first-time-it-is-abingdon-on-thames","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/?p=6021","title":{"rendered":"Abingdon-on-Thames for the first time in 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Pictures of boats on the Thames in Abingdon taken last Sunday)<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag12\/12031104.jpg\" alt=\"Abingdon-on-Thames\" \/><br \/>\nAs far as I can gather 2012 is the first time that Abingdon has officially been called Abingdon-on-Thames.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag12\/12031101.jpg\" alt=\"Abingdon-on-Thames\" \/><br \/>\nLooking through <em>Around Abingdon &#8211; Archive Photographs<\/em> compiled by Nigel Hammond, I do see that shops and businesses did use Abingdon-on-Thames extensively on adverts in the early 1900s.\u00a0 There are also some road signs with the words Borough of Abingdon-on-Thames &#8211; but I cannot find evidence it was ever the official name before now.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag12\/12031103.jpg\" alt=\"Abingdon-on-Thames\" \/><br \/>\nLooking through Abingdon directories in the library from 1860 through to 1973 I just see the words &#8216;The Borough of Abingdon &#8216; above the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170717143446\/http:\/\/www.abingdon.org.uk\/borough_arms\">Borough Arms<\/a>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag12\/12031107.jpg\" alt=\"Abingdon-on-Thames\" \/><br \/>\nDoes anybody know better? <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Pictures of boats on the Thames in Abingdon taken last Sunday) As far as I can gather 2012 is the first time that Abingdon has officially been called Abingdon-on-Thames.
