{"id":24923,"date":"2008-10-14T23:01:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-14T23:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abingdon.blog\/abingdon2007\/2008\/10\/14\/blog-action-day-2008-full-toubab\/"},"modified":"2008-10-14T23:01:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-14T23:01:00","slug":"blog-action-day-2008-full-toubab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/?p=24923","title":{"rendered":"Blog Action Day 2008 &#8211; full toubab!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/images\/08101501.jpg\" \/><br \/>On <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20191208170033\/http:\/\/www.blogactionday.org:80\/\">blog action day<\/a> bloggers try to write about the same subject on the same day &#8211; this year on October 15th the topic is Poverty.<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/images\/08101503.jpg\" \/><br \/>The one example of of the word &#8216;Poverty&#8217; I found today in Abingdon was in the Oxfam shop window where you can &#8220;B<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">ring in your unwanted M&amp;S clothes, get a \u00a35 M&amp;S voucher and help to end poverty<\/span> .<\/p>\n<p>In the year 2000 over \u00a350,000 was raised for the Abingdon Millenium project. It included donations from Abingdon Virginia. There is no millenium monument to show for it &#8211; no sculpture on the Market Place. Instead, the money went to help fund WaterAid projects in Ethiopia and India.<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/images\/amrickman.jpg\" \/><br \/>The idea came from Margaret Rickmann, who with Allan Rickmann &#8211; not the actor, left Abingdon about 4 years ago to work for VSO (voluntary Service Overseas) in the Gambia, and then in Cambodia. They did return for a couple of months in 2006 to Abingdon, UK and Margaret wrote on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rickmann-uk.com\/\">Rickmann Travelog<\/a> with a feeling of reverse culture shock:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Day two back in UK. An efficient but pleasant banking experience. A walk along a tarred road.
