{"id":21312,"date":"2018-10-07T22:16:18","date_gmt":"2018-10-07T21:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/?p=21312"},"modified":"2018-10-07T22:16:18","modified_gmt":"2018-10-07T21:16:18","slug":"abingdon-fair-set-up-and-blessing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/?p=21312","title":{"rendered":"Abingdon Michaelmas Fair Set Up and Blessing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag18\/18100704.jpg\" alt=\"Abingdon Fair\" \/><br \/>\nYesterday it was raining and there was a line of traffic along Ock Street.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag18\/18100702.jpg\" alt=\"Abingdon Fair\" \/><br \/>\nThis morning the line of traffic was replaced by the stalls and rides of Abingdon Michaelmas Fair &#8211; the longest street fair in Europe.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag18\/18100709.jpg\" alt=\"Abingdon Fair\" \/><br \/>\nLocal people enjoy strolling the route, from the Market Place to the junction with Drayton Road, to watch the fair being set up .<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag18\/18100712.jpg\" alt=\"Abingdon Fair\" \/><br \/>\nThe Michaelmas Fair coincides with the time when the trees of the Market Place turn deep red.<\/p>\n<p>Old Michaelmas Day falls on 11 October and so the fair is the Monday and Tuesday before Old Michalemas Day.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag18\/18100707.jpg\" alt=\"Abingdon Fair\" \/><br \/>\nAfter everything had been set up, and swept, and checked there was a time of rest, then at 8pm, in the evening, came the Fair Service.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor of Abingdon and Town Councillors processed to the Galloping Horses, and the Mayor thanked everybody involved in making the fair happen.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Evans, from Abingdon Community Church, led the blessing of the fair which included three hymns, led by Abingdon Town Band, and some prayers.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag18\/18100714.jpg\" alt=\"Abingdon Fair\" \/><br \/>\nAfter that councillors, and anybody who attended the service, were given a free ride on the Galloping Horses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday it was raining and there was a line of traffic along Ock Street.
