\nNational Poetry Day is on 4th October 2018 and Steve sent me a poem from a book called “The Abingdon Fire service” 1871 – 1945.”<\/em> Steve says the book is full of amazing stuff about the town and much of the fire brigades activities in the second world war. <\/p>\n

In Nineteen Hundred and Thirty Eight,
\n‘Twas felt old England’s life was at stake,
\nAnd so, in answer to the old Chiefs call,
\nSome local gallants, about forty in all,
\nBesieged the Station in Bury Street,
\nClean chins, clean boots, and clothes all neat,
\nTo offer their services to the crown
\nAs well as this old English town.<\/p>\n

Auxiliary firemen, he said you will be,
\nIf after twenty drills you are he
\nWho knows all the workings of hydrant and hose
\nOf pumps and ropes, yes don’t forget those,
\nLike little boys with some new toy,
\nWe donned our tunics and, oh boy!
\nConstantly drilling mostly in the dark,
\nLittle thinking ’twas more than a lark …<\/p>\n

Then it came; this was it, bombers galore,
\nThe battle of Britain off Dover’s shores,
\nAnd then every night for hours on end
\nWe stood by for duty at the town’s three ends,
\nThree crews, three pumps which were just the ticket
\nWhile others the Town Hall and Thames Street did picket,
\nBemoaning the watch on the eerie Town Hall,
