{"id":11115,"date":"2014-03-23T11:56:12","date_gmt":"2014-03-23T11:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/?p=11115"},"modified":"2014-03-23T11:56:12","modified_gmt":"2014-03-23T11:56:12","slug":"atom-on-the-market-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/?p=11115","title":{"rendered":"ATOM on the Market Place"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, throughout the day, there was the Visualise Show in the Guildhall, and Science on the Market Place as part of ATOM (Abingdon&#8217;s first Science festival).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag14\/15032302.jpg\" alt=\"Atom on the Market Place\" \/><br \/>\nThe day began early for some, and Iain emailed me this picture asking &#8220;<em>How many particle physicists does it take to erect a gazebo?&#8221;<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag14\/15032320.jpg\" alt=\"Atom on the Market Place\" \/><br \/>\nHis children liked the stall where you dip a tissue into water and it comes out dry &#8211; but were not sure if it was science or magic.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag14\/15032321.jpg\" alt=\"Atom on the Market Place\" \/><br \/>\nThere was lots more to inspire curiosity and wonder in children,<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag14\/15032306.jpg\" alt=\"Atom on the Market Place\" \/><br \/>\nand amaze adults. This is Steve King generating enough pedal power to run a computer and monitor.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag14\/15032323.jpg\" alt=\"Atom on the Market Place\" \/><br \/>\nDr Mike Leary&#8217;s ZooBus was very popular,<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag14\/15032303.jpg\" alt=\"Atom on the Market Place\" \/><br \/>\nand had queues all day to see the creatures and hear the enthusiastic Dr Leary and helpers.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abingdonblog.co.uk\/imag14\/15032305a.jpg\" alt=\"Atom on the Market Place\" \/><br \/>\nWho would have thought that Science would be such hit in Abingdon (the oldest town in the kingdom)?<\/p>\n<p>The idea for these Science events came from James White (pictured) who when he stood down as chair of the Choose Abingdon Partnership, two years ago, thought that creating a Science Festival in Abingdon would be good for the town.
