Abingdon County Hall flag flying at half mast …

The Abingdon Town Flag above the County Hall is flying at half mast out of respect for Keith Hasnip, the Mayor of Abingdon for the year 2004-5. He passed away yesterday, at the age of 84

Keith lived in Abingdon for nearly sixty years, and was a teacher at Abingdon School for 40 years, and Head of Modern Languages. The languages came in very useful during twinning visits. He also served as a Governor at Carswell School.

(Thanks to the Town Crier for the picture above.)

Keith had a great interest in history, and with Audrey, his wife, organised Heritage Open Day, and made it the event it is today. He was also Chairman of the Museum Committee, and in 2004 organised a successful fundraising campaign to buy the Anglo-Saxon ring seen above which was found in Abingdon.

All our sympathy to Audrey and family.

Town Council Meeting Postponed

I intended going to a Town Council meeting for this evening’s blog report, but it has been postponed. So this is a very short report.

Town Council staff will soon move from Old Abbey House to the building above the Registry Office in Roysse Court – its back view is still covered in scaffold. Those upstairs offices have been ‘To Let’ for some years, while owned by the Vale of White Horse District Council, and are being brought back into use by the Town Council, as recent planning applications show.

On 5th November there was a planning application to remove lath and plaster to allow treatment of common furniture beetle, and death watch beetle in the timbers.

On 10th December another application was put in to remove and replace the existing chimney.

Hazardous Area Response Team at Abingdon weir

Members of the local Fire Brigade and Ambulance service were training with the Hazardous Area Response Team at Abingdon weir yesterday. Thanks to Russ for sending the picture. The Hazardous Area Response Team are a specialist team of Ambulance staff who have been trained to provide life-saving medical care in hostile environments.

A Party where the Presents were Given Away …

Thanks to Steve King for this report, and for the one last week about Stert Street in days gone by …

It wasn’t until seven year old Megan (facing the camera) saw a woman sleeping rough on the streets of Abingdon that she realised there are many less fortunate people in the world, not least, children who won’t be getting a Christmas present this year, so she asked her mum what could she do to help.

They found a charity called “Kids Out” who help children caught up in domestic violence situations, and Megan decided to hold a party in aid of them. She invited her entire class from St Nicolas School, Abingdon, and their families. The only stipulation was that each person should bring a new, ready wrapped Christmas present which Megan would then pass on to “Kids Out”.

Saturday afternoon saw approximately 40 children plus their parents arrive at Peachcroft centre where they danced and played games to the “Peoples Party” disco, had their faces painted by “Carols” face painters and ate and drank plenty, courtesy of her Mum, and Nan , and at the end of the day Megan had collected an amazing 74 parcels/presents for Kid’s Out !

Granddad Steve says “Thanks for all those who came and helped out, and to Tesco, Abingdon for their support too. Watch out! This story could be in the Abingdon Herald as well.”
