Abingdon Horse Show has been and gone

Abingdon Horse Show
The annual Abingdon Horse Show took place on Sunday, organised by the Berkshire Downs Riding Club, in Rye Farm Meadows by the River Thames. The club tooking over running this event in 2006 and their website says “The Club is renowned for being friendly and sympathetic!! We really are not tomorrow’s John Whittakers or Mary Thompsons and do not claim to be. What we can offer is a good grounding for you and your horse.”

The sun came out at times and the ice cream van was there along with a number of stalls, such as saddlers, more usually associated with horses….

2121 Squadron ATC Abingdon were there as usual to help set the fences and reset them when they got knocked down.

It is not an event that gets a lot of publicity locally. But there are tell tale signs to alert locals that something is happening: horse manure on town roads being one.

No Legal Challenge … but no building yet

A few weeks ago a group of residents took a petition to the Vale of White Horse District Council asking that the council appeal against the decision of the planning inspector to allow 159 homes to be built in a field alongside South Abingdon.

Legal advice has been taken and the 2 legal experts judge that The Planning Inspector’s decision could not be challenged on legal ground. He allowed the scheme to go ahead because the Vale of White Horse District Council did not have a five year housing plan in place as required by the the NPPF – National Planning Policy Framework, voted in by the coalition government as a way to quickly free up land for house building.

The Planning Inspector had also considered the main objection, traffic, and made sure that traffic mitigation measures go ahead before any development.

So now it is all down to whether the traffic mitigation measures (those extra pedestrian lights) suggested by the developers are allowed by Oxfordshire County Council. That is not a foregone conclusion given that it has to go through public consultation. So expect a story about that in the not too distant future.

Scooting enthusiasts descend on Abingdon-on-Thames

Scooting from Abingdon to East Challow
At midday today Abingdon-on-Thames Market Place looked like a bank holiday seaside town in the 1960s thanks to the Abingdon Bad Company who invited other scooter groups to an Inter County Rideout from Abingdon to East Challow.

Rugby 7s has all the parts you would expect of a game of rugby: lineouts, scrums, offsides, tries etc. .

It just happens much quicker.
