Abingdon Artists and Abingdon Graffiti Artists

Abingdon Artists and Abingdon Graffiti Artists
This week sees the autumn exhibition by Abingdon Artists at St Nicolas Church on the Market Place. As usual there is a £1 raffle with the chance to win a picture. The prize picture is called Summer Glow by Muriel Halliday. Visitors can also take part in a competition to choose the favorite picture by entering their choice into a ballot.

When pneumatic drills are silent

Gas Pipes Need Replacing
East St Helen Street is closed so that the main gas pipes can be replaced. Notices say it will be closed for two weeks.
Gas Pipes Need Replacing
Most of the time, apart from when diggers are moving about, there is room enough to drive a car down there so I am not sure why the road needed to be closed. But it does mean, when pneumatic drills are silent, that you can take a quiet stroll down East St Helen Street in the middle of the road.

Splash of Pink – Against Breast Cancer – Preview

Splash of Pink - preview
You may have noticed that shop windows (such as Pure Marie) have had ‘Against Breast Cancer’ pink balloons and displays at some time this month. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a chance to raise awareness of the disease, and to help raise funds to research better ways of treatment.
Splash of Pink - preview
That is what locally based charity, Against Breast Cancer, is all about, and they will be taking over the Market Place on Saturday 27th October to give everybody a chance to enjoy a Splash of Pink before October ends.

Kerry Katona, Bobby Davro, and former world boxing champion Steve Collins will be there among others. See Splash of Pink for more details.

(If anybody is available the day before (Friday) from 8am to 10am and would like to support the charity for a couple of hours please Email: info@againstbreastcancer.org.uk . Also if anybody has always wanted to do a firewalk then Saturday could be your chance … follow the link to the firewalk.)

Abingdon runner wins Abingdon Marathon

I was suprised to hear that five men were going for the world record at the Abingdon Marathon this year …
Abingdon Marathon
At about five miles into the race, as they came past the Market Place, the leaders were already spread out, and Paul Fernandez from Abingdon Amblers was in second place. No Kenyans were with him.

It turned out the five were trying to beat the world record for running together connected. There are points along the course where runners get a good cheer. One is at the Market Place.

Another is at the corner of Preston Road where spectators can see the runners on three occasions.

Paul Fernandez was in second place for most of the race but within the last couple of miles overtook the leader and came in to win with a time of 2:32. First time I remember an Abingdon runner winning the Abingdon Marathon.

The winning lady was number 60, Liz Hartney, from Reading Road Runners, who broke the course record in the womens race.

There were over a thousand others runners taking part, runners of all standards, and they all had to run past the mural showing the Abingdon Marathon on the underpass where there is about two miles to go.

The video shows Paul Fernandez running up to Tilsley Park with 400 meters to go, and then the five connected runners breaking the world record.
