Baking and Brass, Bowling and Bands

Brass
Before the Royal Wedding yesterday, the Market Place in Abingdon had the Abbey Brass Band playing.
Bakes
They were supported by members from Abbey Brass who had baked cakes. This was a repeat of last years successful ‘Bakes and Brass‘ to raise money for the Abbey Brass. Their band hut, next to the outdoor pool, like the outdoor pool needs a rebuild, and so they are starting to put plans together for that, and to raise money for what could be a large project.
Bowling
Also on the Market Place were Abingdon Bowling Club with a tombola.
Bowling
There were also members and staff from Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council selling arm-bands for Music in the Parks. The bands will be Sidekickz, Undercovers, Oxfordshire Youth Big Band, Abingdon Town Band + fireworks.

Congratulations to Councillor Alice Badcock (on the right) who is not only on the town council but also as a VWHDC councillor has joined the ruling cabinet. Matthew Barber recently stood down after seven years as VWHDC leader. Roger Cox has taken over as leader, and has brought in Alice as Head of Community Services.

All good stuff going on but such a shame a local charity (Against Breast Cancer) haven’t been given a mention for their Family Fun Day at Millet’s Farm on 19th. Unfortunately they didn’t have a choice of dates and booked so far in advance, the resulting footfall was low due to the Royal Wedding. (A mention here and there beforehand might have helped)?!

Sandy Lovatt … why would he be so keen on developing this site and what could possibly go wrong with him at the tiller?

I’m not sure that the Upper Reaches situation is quite as simple as implied by some of these comments. Caparo still hold a long lease – it is not in the Vale’s gift to re-allocate it elsewhere unless they give it up. This site and the Old Gaol are the only places in Abingdon where there is scope for hotels, restaurants etc to capitalise on our beautiful riverside: yes the market conditions may not be good for these at present but those conditions can change. However if the site is made available for private housing that chance of public access is gone for ever. I hope the Vale can find a workable solution with Caparo, but in the meantime I also hope they will lean on them to keep the site in reasonable repair – surely that must be part of the lease conditions.
