Snow was ‘cold but fun’. Rain was no fun at all.

Snow Rain and Wet Carpets
Snow and then rain fell on Abingdon this morning. The snow settled on car roofs but not on the pavements.

Undeterred by the snow, Abingdon Rowing Club had a number of boats out on the river. About twenty minutes after taking this picture, I saw Adam – with the yellow top – at Trinity Church.

Adam was on the sound desk , and I was on the projector. Nowadays, nost people sing the songs off the projector screen rather than from the hymn book. Adam said the rowing was ‘cold but fun.’ He is an ex boy scout / boy scout leader. It still took him some time to warm up his hands, as his seat and the carpet round about got more and more damp.

After church the snow had turned to rain – which was no fun at all.

If anyone would like a couple of hours of escapism to get out of the cold I would recommend everyone to go and see the film, The Darkest Hour. It is the story of Winston Churchill at the time when Britain was facing invasion from Nazi Germany. It made me quite emotional. The campaign against the Low Countries and France lasted less than six weeks. Germany attacked in the west on May 10, 1940. Initially, British and French commanders had believed that German forces would attack through central Belgium as they had in World War I, and rushed forces to the Franco-Belgian border to meet the German attack. The main German attack however, went through the Ardennes Forest in south-eastern Belgium and northern Luxembourg. German tanks and infantry quickly broke through the French defensive lines and advanced to the coast. The film highlights the decisions that had to be made as it was obvious that Hitler, once conquering France would try to invade Britain. There were people in the Government who were pushing for negotiating with Hitler in order to gain a peace. But as Churchill reasoned, peace at what cost? To see Britain as a puppet state of Germany with the swastika flying over Buckingham Palace and the houses of parliament. Roosevelt in America refused Churchill any help as they had made a declaration of nutrality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pNOCzV5jG0
