There are lots of interesting images of Abingdon that appear on ebay, some of them asking quite a high price.
How much would you be willing to pay for the following cards currently on ebay?
Abingdon Snow Scene April 26 1908. River & Church
Abingdon. Carswell Council School, Bostock Road
Abingdon – the market square
The asking prices are £17.50 (with free postage) for the first one, £8.00 (and free postage) for the second, and £3 (with £1 postage) for the third.
The Action For Children In Conflict charity shop in Bath Street had a box of old postcards for sale at £1 each, and removed them for valuation. None of them were of Abingdon but to the right person could fetch far more.
Lovely photos, been trying to date them? I think the school is pre WW1, perhaps circa 1910? And the market place late 80’s? Any thoughts peeps ?
I think the snow scene is somewhere around 1908.. possibly towards the 1st quarter
🙂
And the other two ?
Is the market place from last Saturday afternoon? The flowers look lovely!
I love the third one – the concrete planters full of unexciting plants. (Boring Postcards by photographer Martin Parr is a favourite art book of mine).
eBay is an odd place, people will pay well over the odds for some items and in many cases more than the item retails for in the high street, I can only put this down to the ‘I want it and I want it now’ immediacy of life nowadays. Like any auction I research the value of the item I seek, set my max bidding price and see how far things go, sometimes I win, sometimes I lose and usually another similar item will be along soon.
I can see collectors being interested in postcards but £8 or even £17.50 really? It should of course be remembered that eBay take something like 10% of each sale and PayPal another 5% as a transaction fee, then there’s sellers overheads to cover post and packing so the seller might see £14 out of the £17.50.
