Drayton Road Resurfacing Work during a Full Moon

Drayton Road Resurfacing Work
There was a sign near St Helen’s Church trying to stop motorists going towards the Iron Bridge in the wrong direction. Traffic heading from South Abingdon is allowed over the bridge one way. The road is too narrow in two places for anything more.
Drayton Road Resurfacing Work
There are two bridges connecting South Abingdon with the north, and the the other bridge on Drayton Road is closed overnight for resurfacing work. So traffic heading south had to find another way round.

But a lot of cars, going south, were risking going the wrong way over the Iron Bridge. That led to some tooting of horns.
Drayton Road Resurfacing Work
When the police arrived they told several car drivers off for coming over the Iron Bridge the wrong way. They then started turned cars back before they could break the law.

Full moon tonight. There have been two full moons this calendar month. Thanks to Peter, from Abingdon Camera Club, who sent me this picture

If the police had any gumption then common sense could prevail. This is a 4 metre long one way system. The alternative is via the A34 to Milton Interchange & back through Steventon & Drayton; a seven mile journey. Yet more traffic misery for the residents of South Abingdon.

A lack of forward planning by OCC Highways, why couldn’t some traffic lights and temporary 2-way working be set up at the iron bridge for the closure period. A rediculous situation to expect people to travel to Milton and back or alternatively Culham, Sutton Courtenay and Drayton. There’s far too much carte blanche closing of roads of late. I believe even the Police were of the opinion that a temporary suspension of the 1-way at the bridge would be sensible.

They have to get ready for the 250 more cars using the Drayton Road when the houses are built by the Preston Road Traffic lights. There are also plans to build new housing in Drayton and Steventon. The government traffic inspector took no notice of the fact that it is very difficult to get in or out of South Abingdon. I asked about emergencies in South Abingdon and traffic trying to get in and out of the area but no one cares about South Abingdon.

Coming home last night I knew of roadworks and just assumed they would have done something to make iron bridge two way. Got as far as those no entry signs and then took the 15 min detour over Culham bridge.
Obviously roadworks are needed but it does seem that despite how obvious it is from a quick look at a map, nevermind observations, no body in highways realizes there is only one way into south Abingdon and how many people they are sending round for miles because they couldn’t be bothered to set something up over the iron bridge.
It would be a significant cost to traffic light or man bridge and corner by St.Helen’s but given low level of traffic in the closure period (8pm-6am) it is feasible and surely worth it??

Janet, THEY are proposing to site an Oxford Park & Ride and a 1000 new homes in North Abingdon. THEY don’t care about North Abingdon either.

During the day I have seen cars and vans drive the wrong way over the bridge many times. They know it’s wrong and pretend they are turning right, but a quick glance in the mirror proves it.
Anyway, the disruption is only for a few nights!

If years ago they had put a bridge over the Thames in South Abingdon to Culham all this could have been avoided but OH NO ! We can’t do that as it would cost too much money. But they apparently can find money for fancy park and rides to save the Oxford residents traffic trouble.

So,um, common sense doesn’t prevail in the Vale even once in a blue moon? If I wasn’t a regular reader of this blog I wouldn’t believe it…
