Theme Day – Upside Down

Upside Down
I read at last week’s Town Council Meeting that there could be a Bun Throwing in 2016. It could be because 460 years have passed since the Town was granted a Charter by Queen Mary.

Some people hold umbrellas upside down to catch the current buns that rain down from the County Hall Roof on such occasions (picture from the Ceremony in June 2012).

That’s a little bit of a lame excuse for a bun throwing. It used to be for things like accessions or royal jubilees.

I can see the point of celebrating 450 or 500 years. But 460?

Excellent, I love the bun throws.

Can I just ask…would anyone agree, or disagree that the bun throws and the crowds they produce demonstrate David Cameron’s “localism” in action? Or was “localism” to mean something else?

Got a bit competitive. Remember parents arrived in 1976, so there was a carnival, and floats. Huge event with bun throwing. Over the years, just got too much of a crush…people would barge you out of the way, seemed to be competitions how many buns you could collect.

I agree with Sarah – it takes away from the egalitarianism of the event to have selfish umbrella-wielders harvesting most of the buns and spoiling the view. Ban them (the umbrellas, not the wielders)!

Blimey, what next! Bun throwing, and catching with inverted umbrellas.

In my opinion, this is the most original, and best, post for this Theme Day. I love it.

Sarah, well said. The bun thrower should stop throwing buns if someone is using an inverted umbrella. It is unfair to those whose view it obscures and very un-English, selfish behaviour.
Which of Her Majestys’ Birthdays will be celebrated, as she has two? Her actual Birthday will be on Thursday 21 April 2016 and her Official Birthday will be celebrated on a Saturday in June.

As long as the day chosen isn’t quite as wet as the last bun throwing. Umbrellas were certainly needed that day.

As far as Bun Throwing is concerned – the Town Council haven’t yet made a decision on this, as it would first have to be approved in next year’s budget.
However -if there is a bun throwing then it would be around the weekend of the Queen’s Official Birthday, not her personal birthday.

People take it far too seriously. I normally catch a few being 6’4”, however I usually give them all away to kids before I go home. Its just a bit of fun after all
